Empowering a diverse workforce with SharePoint 2010
World-famous retailer Harrods recently invested in a Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Intranet and Extranet to improve collaboration and information sharing among their blended workforce. The deployment was carried out by Microsoft Gold Partner ICS Solutions.
Internal communication is a challenge for Harrods, which has over 8,000 full-time and part-time employees and external associates working in their London-based store. The retailer opted for SharePoint 2010 to increase employee engagement, by surfacing and centralising all news and information. The SharePoint 2010 Intranet has most certainly improved corporate communications and collaboration among their blended workforce, and as an additional benefit, Harrods expects to save £75,000 on printing and distribution of information.

The Intranet also allows Harrods to be compliant with UK legislation, which states that all staff should have access to the same benefits and information.
The project, that lasted four months, has been completed in two levels, with a corporate Intranet offering internal access and a secure Extranet, which mirrors the Intranet, providing read-only access.
Harrods plans to continue to drive investment in the Intranet, further developing additional features to its specific needs.
